IDAHO COUNTY FREE PRESS

DECEMBER 25, 1902

Frank Payne and Frank Branham were killed in a snow slide near the Crown mine on Government creek about December 19, 4 miles from where the 3 men were killed last year.

Payne was a mail carrier and Branham working on the Crown properties.  Payne was not familiar with the trail and Branham left the camp to pilot him to the summit.  As Branham was leaving he told several of the men that he would be back in time for supper, but his non-arrival caused no uneasiness.  In the morning when he did not come in, a search party started out and soon found that they had been caught in a slide.  The whole force of men turned out and after three days found the bodies.  A messenger was immediately dispatched here to Warren to notify the relatives.  Branham is from Payette and Payne from Yakima.
