Died at the poor farm on January 23, 1899, "Shipmate"Burns, aged 84 years.  "Shipmate" was about the oldest of the pioneers of this county, having been one of the first men in the Pierce and Elk City placer excitements in 1860-61.  He was a native of England, and an old man-o'-warsman, and mined in Elk City until forced by failing eyesight into the poor farm more than two years ago.
