Centenarian Dead

Francis Marrion Hughes, perhaps the oldest man on the Pacific coast passed away in Grangeville Sunday morning.  While his true age could not be learned he was undoubtedly considerable over 100 years old and some place his age at 119.  He was born in North Carolina and came to this country from California during the gold excitement at Warren and Florence and he was considered an old man then. "Grandpa" Hughes was unmarried and has no known relatives, he was in apparent good health, but his memory was not the best.  Until five or six years ago he earned his living by doing odd jobs and since then citizens have contributed to his support as his greatest fear seemed to be that he would be sent to the poor farm.
