August, 1885

A man named nathaniel G. Smith was drowned in Salmon river lately while enroute from Elk City to Warrens.  Smith and partner had hewed a dugout from a tree trunk, but in mid stream the thing rolled over and Smith lost his grip and sank.  His partner, Sam Robbins, clung to the skiff and got across all right.
