The Stites I.O.O.F. Cemetery may be reached by crossing the bridge over the Southfork of the Clearwater River in the center of the village of Stites and proceeding straight ahead on the narrow sparsely traveled road that leads up the hillside. (Do not take either fork in the road.) The road is quite steep and winds it's way to the top of the hill. There you will come to a trailer home on the left and a large metal shed on the right. The road makes a sharp turn here to the right leading around the shed on the lower side. Proceed very slowly as the roadbed is rutted. It is a very short distance to the cemetery from the shed, but there is an electric fence stretching across the road.

The owners will disconnect the fence if they know in advance that the cemetery needs to be accessed. This road will bring you to the corner of the graveyard. After passing through another barbed wire gate you will pass onto Indian land. The cemetery is entirely fenced with barbed wire, and there is no gate for entry. The cemetery has not been used since 1956. It is in bad condition and has a history of being snake infested.Be very cautious if you wish to visit the cemetery. There are 110 graves in the cemetery with the earliest burial being 1905 and the latest 1956. There are 58 graves with tombstones, many tipped over or loose from their base, 52 without markers and one unknown grave.

The only plat available is barely legible in places and badly torn. A separate record had been kept but is not complete. The above count was obtained by comparing both records. Included with this information is an inventory of the cemetery, which appears to be complete, but does not include the lot or block information, as there are no lodge members currently available to verify or clarify the full inventory.

A Mr. Bishop of the Stites area originally donated the cemetery ground. It included approximately three acres. The Bishop land now adjoining belongs to Arthur Lacey. The cemetery was never closed for burial, but due to the steep grade and the use of other cemeteries, it has not been used since 1956.

I have transcribed from the work of Mrs. Gerald Smith of Grangeville, and Mrs. William Stadtman of Stites who completed this inventory Sep 11, 1975.
