PRESS SEPT. 14, 1905 GRANGEVILLE IN ASHES The long dreaded conflagration has occurred, and as a result the heart of Grangeville is in ashes. The fire started in the morning of September 14 in the bowling alley and the livery barn on Main Street were in flames before an alarm could be sounded. The fire spread rapidly in spite of heroic efforts of fireman and citizens. A heavy charge of giant powder has been placed under the old Grange building which completely demolished it and probably did much to keep the fire from spreading beyond Hall Street. The real estate office and millinery store burned and the intense heat soon broke the glass front of Alexander & Freidenrich’s big store and flames devoured the splendid building and stock as if it were paper. The Bank of Camas Prairie was gutted, the walls are still standing. |
