DEATH OF OLD PIONEER Date
about 1915 David J. Brewer of the Elk Camp Passes to His Reward*The Free Press has his name spelled incorrectly. His name was David G. Brawner. David J. Brewer, an old time miner of the Elk camp, passed away February 16 after a brief illness, death being due to the infirmities of old age. His daughter, Mrs. Olive Peters, of Portland, when notified of his serious condition, left for the camp intending to take her father to the Coast but arrived too late as the condition of the old gentlemen was such that he died several hours after her arrival.
The
deceased, who was of a fine old southern family came west from Georgia, his
native state in 1859, taking up his abode in what is now known as Denver which
at that time consisting of a few log building on Cherry Creek.
Here, he was employed by Robert Gregory on the first quartz mine discovered
in the West.
In
the sixties he went to Alder Gulch, Montana where he placered for some time and
here became acquainted with W.A. Clark, of Butte, who realizing his ability,
secured his service and with whom he remained for a period of fourteen years.
Answering the call for
the wilderness and new west, he left He was a southern gentleman and a true pioneer and did full well his part in transferring the west from a wilderness to a land of happy homes and civilization.
**Notes sent by Sharon Brawner - David is buried in the Elk City cemetery. He died Feb. 15, 1915. He was born in Georgia on March 29, 1839 to Joel and Elizabeth Brawner. A brief item in the Elk City Miner on Sept. 11, 1909 read: "Dave Brawner returned from an outing at Finley's in Red River."
