Free Press, April 15, 1915 OLD RESIDENT DIES Charles F. Brown Died Last Saturday and is Laid to Rest - Was 68 Years Old Charles F. Brown, an old and highly respected citizen of Grangeville died last Saturday morning following an illness of some time, his death being due to heart trouble. The deceased was 68 years old and was born in Green County, Wisconsin on November 15, 1846. I his early childhood, in 1859, the old pioneer days, he crossed the plains with his father and made his home in the west. He was educated in the public schools at Dutch Flat, California. In 1864, he enlisted in Company D, 7th California infantry and was sent to the border of Sujona and Mexico to resist the French. He came to Idaho County in March, 1879 and took a homestead two miles south of Grangeville and has since made his home here in this county. Of late years, he has resided in Grangeville. He leaves a wife and three children to mourn his departure. they are W.G. Brown of Drummond, Montana, Mrs. Ada Keller of Lewiston, Idaho, and Mrs. Mary J. Markham of Grangeville. He also has two brothers and one sister who live in Lincoln, Nebraska. The funeral services were conducted from the residence, Rev. R.E. Gornall, pastor of the Federated Church conducting the services and burial being in the charge of undertaker, W.E. Graham. Members of the Grand Army of the Republic acted as pall bearers. The death of Charles Brown marks the departure of another of the old pioneers who first settled the Great West and braved its dangers in the early days, offering himself for his country's defense when the call was sent out and living a life which has won friends by the score who mourn with his relatives for his death.
